Join the Conversation: The Caregiver Crisis

For many people with disabilities and their families, the caregiver crisis has become front and center in their lives.

There are thousands of hours of needed care are going unmet. People are not receiving the care they need. Whether you work for an agency trying to find caregivers for clients or a person who is trying to hire workers yourself, finding caregivers is almost impossible.

Lots of advocacy groups are trying to come up with a solution to this. When you need to find direct care workers, individually or with an agency, what are some unique ways it can be done? Do you have an idea of how to help improve the current situation we are in? What are some ways we can start to mitigate this issue?

If you could ask for one thing right now to fix the problem, what would it be?

Let’s brainstorm ideas here!

"In today’s world where everything is so divided, I would hope people would to accept people for who they are, and if they want to make a joke about someone publicly, at the very least, ask the person beforehand if it’s ok to use. "

In this month's entry, Stacy discusses the situation that happened during the Oscars and the connection to people with disabilities it has. What's your take on the situation? Have you ever been in a similar situation?

128 Stacy’s Journal

"If we can send civilian tourists to space, we should be able to take flights in airplanes without our vital equipment being damaged. Unfortunately, I don’t foresee anything changing anytime soon. We, as a disability community, have to continue to make sure that we are seen and heard. That’s the only way changes are going to happen."

In December's journal entry, Stacy talked about how we are now sending tourists to space, but, yet, people who use wheelchairs can't fly in an airplane without worrying about our chairs being wrecked. Something doesn't add up - - she discussed how we need to make everything inclusive. Do you agree with her?

"I don’t have the solution to this massive issue. While I do think adequate pay and maybe some benefits would help, I don’t think that’s the whole issue either. People don’t want to work period. When you have an overall lack of enthusiasm to work and can make more money not working, how can you blame them?"

Stacy discusses how the direct caregiver shortage has become dire in this month's journal entry. Have you struggled to find caregivers?

I have to remind myself that they probably don’t realize what they’re doing or saying may be offensive. While I don’t see these situations changing anytime soon, educating people is important. Please take advantage of the abilities you do have."

In this month's journal entry, Stacy shares how it irritates her when capable people take advantage of specialized equipment or say something irrational about somebody's disability. Do these things bother you?
