Calling Microbusiness Owners
There is a new way to exhibit at the Self-Determination Conference this year! The All Abilities Market is an online marketplace where microenterprises and artists can sell their products and/or services. You have the unique opportunity to join this marketplace and sell online, not only at the Self-Determination Conference but all year long! Applications are due September 1.

Voting Bills Update
Governor Evers recently vetoed bills that would have created new barriers and have impacted the voting rights of many people with disabilities. The Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition released a new document that highlights stories of voters who these bills would have impacted. While these bills were paused for now, we encourage you to continue to reach out to your legislators and share how important it is to make voting accessible for everyone.
People First Wisconsin is Hiring!
People First Wisconsin is a statewide Self-Advocacy organization for people with disabilities. They help people speak up for themselves, share ideas, start local Self-Advocacy groups, and work together with advocates across Wisconsin on issues important to members to improve life for people with disabilities. Currently, they're accepting applications for a Office Manager and a Financial Manger. Learn more about these positions and find out how to apply by clicking here. - SPARKS Grants: SPARKS grants are meant to give people with disabilities more social connections by participating in community activities, and they help provide inclusive programming that gives people more opportunities. Applications are due September 10.
- Input Needed on "No Surprise Billing" Rule: Surprise billing can occur when someone receives care from a provider outside of their insurance carrier’s network. This often occurs in emergency situations, when people do not have control over where they are taken for medical care. A new rule would implement requirements set in the No Surprises Act to establish protections against surprise billing. The public comment period closes September 7.
- The Importance of Web Accessibility: Most use the Internet on a daily basis. The opportunities that the Internet brings are endless. However, for people with visual impairments, these opportunities are significantly more limited. Learn why website accessibility is becoming more and more important.
- COVID Added to Disability Qualification List: Recently, the US Department of Justice and the US Department of Health and Human Services released guidance that explains that explains when “long COVID” may be a disability under the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. Learn about what this means.
- Fact Sheet: Late in July, we celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Biden-Harris administration released a fact sheet about what they've done to ensure people with disabilities receive resources and are included in key administration proposals. Check it out.
- Report on AVs: The U.S. Access Board has released a summary report on its four-part series of virtual meetings on making autonomous vehicles (AVs) accessible to passengers with disabilities. Learn what the report reveals.
- Transit Training Opportunities: The National Center for Mobility Management recently announced some training opportunities for transit systems. Find out more about these opportunities.
- Website Accessibility Website: Recently, a baseline for testing accessibility of web content was developed. The criteria sets a minimum for testing accessibility of websites. Learn about what the criteria is.
- Accessible Tourist Attraction: A popular tourist attraction in Door County has recently become accessible to all visitors. Find out which attraction got renovated.
- Health Care Outreach Toolkit: The Aging and Disability Business Institute has developed a toolkit for community-based organizations to help conduct outreach to potential partners and craft effective messages. Learn what else is included in the kit.

Registration Opens August 2nd!
The 2021 Self-Determination Conference will be October 18-20. As the COVID variants continue to be monitored, plans are being made to offer three options how people can safely participate in the conference.
- At the Kalahari! If you have been fully vaccinated and are comfortable with large in-door gatherings, join us at the Kalahari.
- At one of the local Watch Parties around the state. If you have been fully vaccinated and are comfortable with smaller in-door gatherings, join others at a local watch party.
- Join Virtually. If you are not comfortable with coming in person or have not been fully vaccinated, we are offering a virtual option.

- Ipads for Loan: WisTech, Wisconsin's Assistive Technology Act Program, now has iPads available for short term loan for up to 30 days. Find out how the program works.
- Paralympics May Help Boost Inclusion: Many experts think that this summer's Paralympic Games are an opportunity for businesses to embrace an underrepresented segment of the workforce and help with the global coronavirus recovery. Read about why advocates feel the games will spotlight the need for inclusion.
- Public Comment on Statewide Transition Plan: The Wisconsin Department of Health Services opened a 30-day public comment period on its updated statewide transition plan to be submitted for final approval to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service. The public comment period closes July 26.
- Great Resources: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government has provided a range of programs to support individuals, families, and communities. Check them out!
- Executive Order: Recently, President Biden signed an Executive Order to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in the Federal workforce. Learn what the order confirms.
- Boost to Disability Services: Although, President Biden's effort to get eliminate waiting lists for people with disabilities by getting more funds into Medicaid and home-and-community-based services has halted at the moment, it appears the plan may soon get new life. Find out why advocates think an increase in funding will be coming soon.
- Travel Website: The world is opening up again and that means people are beginning to travel. The International Transport Forum and the Federation Internationale de l' Automobile recently launched a new website that has information on facilities and options for people with disabilities traveling by car. Read about what kind of information the website provides.
- Rise in Employment: According to the June jobs report, there were big rises in employment for people with and without disabilities. Find out how much it increased.
- Celebrity Case Calls Attention to Questions on Guardianship: Recently, due to the attention from the Britney Spears case, debate over Guardianship has been highlighted. While legal oversight arrangements are needed as protection for some, many disability advocates question the need for them in many cases. Learn about why many people feel guardianship is too widely used for people with disabilities.

Wisconsin Assembly Representatives will be voting very soon on voting bills that may make it harder for many people with disabilities, older adults, and people of color to vote. The Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition has put together this summary of how the bills would impact people. If you are concerned about the bills, now is the time to call/email your Assembly Representative to share how these bills could impact you or a loved one. New Bills Could Make it Harder for People with Disabilities to Vote
Wisconsin legislators have introduced bills that will make it harder for many people to vote. The Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition has put together a summary of these bills and how it would impact people. We encourage you to look at this and, if you have concerns about the bills, to contact your legislators.
Stay Up-to-Date about Long-Term Care Advocacy
InControl Wisconsin is sending a letter to the Joint Finance Committee of the state legislature asking the Committee to ensure that if additional funding is added to the budget for Long-Term Care in general or for the workforce crisis, then IRIS should get its fair share. Family Care and nursing homes both received increases in the last two state budgets, but IRIS did not.
The Wisconsin Long-Term Care Workforce Alliance does frequent videos about what's happening with the workforce advocacy. Check out this website for updates on what's happening with the workforce crisis. There are videos on how to talk to legislators about your experiences and concerns. Let your voice be heard!

- Home Modifications Grant Program: HUD’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes has announced $30 million in grant funds and training resources to non-federal entities to establish the Older Adults Home Modification Grant Program. The grant program will assist experienced nonprofits, state and local governments, and public housing authorities in programs that make home modifications and limited repairs to meet the needs of low-income older adult homeowners. Applications due May 4th.
- Stimulus Checks: Many people with have received stimulus checks. Read about how some people are putting their money in an ABLE account.
- Waitlist Eliminated: At the end of February, Wisconsin achieved something highly anticipated for people with disabilities. Read about how the waitlist for long-term care services was eliminated for adults.
- Stimulus Bill Sends Funds to the Disability Community: Recently, President Biden signed a big pandemic relief bill that will send billions of dollars to special education and home-and-community-based services. Learn details about how this will help people.
- Emergency Broadband Benefit Program: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched an Emergency Broadband Benefit Program to help households struggling to pay for internet service during the pandemic. Find out who is eligible.

2021 Self-Determination Conference Call for Proposals
Are you interested in presenting at the 2021 Self-Determination Conference? The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities is seeking session proposals for Tuesday, October 19th & Wednesday, October 20th, 2021. This year’s theme: Growing Stronger Together will help people with disabilities lead more Self-Determined lives by recognizing the valued role communities play in our lives! Presentations should include at least one self-advocate and must be able to be done both in-person and on video. Proposals are due April 2nd. Learn more and apply today!

- Self-driving Vehicles Online Forum: Self-driving or “autonomous” vehicles stand to revolutionize transportation in the U.S. and around the world. Here's an opportunity to join an online forum discussing inclusive design for autonomous vehicles.
- Vaccine Frustration: While Wisconsin has made progress in the vaccine rollout, disability advocates say some of the most vulnerable people still face multiple challenges accessing it. Read about some of the obstacles people with disabilities are facing.
- Self-advocate Class: The ARC of Wisconsin is leading a class for self-advocates. Registration closes April 1st. Learn more and register today!
- Your Input is Needed: The Center on Aging and Trauma of The Jewish Federations of North America’s Holocaust Survivor Initiative, invites organizations to participate in a national survey on Person-Centered, Trauma-Informed Care. Survey closes March 22nd.
- Vaccine Prioritization: With vaccines beginning to be more available, disability advocates want the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to update its prioritization plan to include the high-risk disability community. Read about why advocates want this.
- Funding Opportunities for Technology Research and Activities: The Administration for Community Living has two new funding opportunities for research and activities for technology interventions to encourage community living outcomes for people with disabilities. Applications due April 26th.

- Employment Outcome Research Funding Opportunity: A new funding opportunity from the Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects and Center Program hopes to achieve the goals of, and improve the effectiveness of, services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act through well-designed research, training, technical assistance, and dissemination activities to benefit rehabilitation service providers, individuals with disabilities, family members, and other stakeholders. Grant applications are due March 22nd.
- Economy Recovery Agenda: National Disability Institute offers a 15-point agenda to advance economic recovery and resilience for people with disabilities who represent a most vulnerable population too often ignored in plans for the economic recovery for our nation. - Opportunity to Provide Feedback on Web Accessibility Guidelines: The Accessibility Guidelines Working Group has published a working draft of the third version of the Web Accessibility Guidelines. Feed back is due February 26th.
- Employment for People with Disabilities Continues to Stall: According to the January Jobs Report, the pandemic continues to slow employment for people with disabilities. Find out why people are hopeful it will start to improve soon.
- New Administration Prioritizing Accessibility: The new president administration is making accessibility a priority. Learn about what steps are being made to ensure accessibility for everyone.
- Accessible COVID-19 Resources: The Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation, a part of the College of Design at Georgia Tech, has partnered with the CDC to ensure that important information about the virus is accessible for all people. Check out these great resources!
- "Nothing About Us Without Us" Call to Action: The saying, "Nothing About Us Without Us" has been used in the disability community for many years. It simply means that no decisions should be made regarding people with disabilities without their input. Read about a nationwide program that aims to increase participation of underrepresented communities in medical research.
- Television Representation: More and more entertainment companies are committing to consider actors/actresses with disabilities in their movies. Read about how a big tv network recently committed to auditions for actors/actresses with disabilities.
- Impact of the Pandemic: A recent survey done by the Wisconsin Survival Coalition revealed the impact of the pandemic is having on people with disabilities and their families. Learn what the survey found.

Your Input is Needed!
Wisconsin policymakers are right now making critical decisions about funding and changes to disability programs. The state budget is the most important piece of legislation that impacts people’s lives. Survival Coalition is gathering people’s stories and thoughts about the most pressing needs in our state to help policymakers understand disability issues. We encourage you to complete this survey to help bring the most important issues to the forefront.

- Accessible Housing Struggles: For many people with disabilities, finding accessible housing is very challenging. Read about how one woman in Wisconsin is taking matters into her own hands.
- COVID Dashboard: The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has developed several dashboards to provide information regarding how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting members and participants in the adult long-term care programs. Learn what the statistics show.
- Assistive Technology Channel: Wisconsin’s Assistive Technology Advisory Council (AT Council) has launched a YouTube channel in order to share videos of WisTech assistive technology trainings. Check it out and see if any of of the videos may be useful to you.
- Social Security Increase: Beginning in 2021, Supplemental Social Security and other benefits will increase. Find out how much the increase will be.
- Great Resource: Parents of children with disabilities are facing difficult decisions about how to keep their children safe and learning. Check out this "Back to SCOL" decision guide developed by Stanford University to help parents decide what is best for their child.
- Emergency Preparedness Trainings: The Health and Human Services Office of Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response created a new online training on older adults and disasters. Learn about what this training includes.
- Seeking Inventive Solutions: The Administration for Community Living is looking for creative solutions to help with better the direct care workforce and improve the quality of home-and-community-based services. Learn more about this competitive challenge.
- Prioritizing Services: Medicaid officials are pushing states to move forward with efforts to rebalance the long-term care services for people with disabilities to favor home-and-community-based services rather than institutions. Read about a toolkit to to help providers and people who receive services make sure they're doing everything possible.
- Biannual Report: The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities released its biannual report highlighting what they've done to support people with disabilities. Learn about some of the things they've done.
- Guardianship Reform Briefing: The national Working Interdisciplinary Networks of Guardianship Stakeholders released briefing about guardianship reform and encouraging less restrictive options. Find out what some of the suggestions are.
- Technology Competition: Most people don't think twice about completing simple tasks such as slicing bread or doing laundry, but for people with disabilities, technology equipment often help them do these basic tasks. Read about a competition for people with physical disabilities highlighting new technology that helps them complete daily tasks.
- Caregiver Struggles: A recent survey found that nearly half of Wisconsin's direct care workers work a second job to support themselves. Find out what advocacy groups are urging the state Legislature to do to help with this.
- Free Online Caregiver Courses: The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources (GWAAR) recently announced a partnership with Trualta, a new free online educational tool for family caregivers across the state. Learn more about these courses.

- Pandemic Helpline: As the pandemic continues, a new 24-hour support line is working to help individuals with developmental disabilities and those who care for them cope during this tough time. Learn more about this free service.

Direct Care Workforce Survey
InControl Wisconsin is partnering with The Wisconsin Long Term Care Workforce Alliance, Wisconsin Personal Services Association and Survival Coalition on this Direct Care Workforce survey. This survey is to learn more about direct care worker experiences in Wisconsin. As the backbone of long term care in Wisconsin, it is important for decision makers to learn about worker experiences from workers directly. Our organizations advocate on behalf of the workforce and people with disabilities and older adults who need care. Names and responses to this survey WILL NOT be shared with employers and all answers are confidential. Survey results will be used in communications with policymakers in future advocacy activities. There's an opportunity to provide your email at the end of this survey if you would like to stay in touch about future advocacy opportunities. This survey will close October 23, 2020.
