March 2018 Featured Discussion Question: How can people use self-direction strategies to obtain affordable, accessible housing?

Questions about Self-Directed Supports or Self-Determination

Thanks for the info Laurine.  Some creative and committed people in Illinois developed a nice booklet some years ago that might be of interest to some in this group.  Of course, programs in Wisconsin are not the same as programs in Illinois, and so some of the detail on implementation wouldn't apply.  However, it has a nice overview of building community to build housing options.

I haven't really connected with a Kenosha parent group, or really any group of parents are working on expanding options.  (Moved here 2 years ago.)  I'm thinking about starting a group for parents of adult children with disabilities to do some education on trusts, able, microboards, path, etc.  As a newcomer, not sure of the best way to go about it.  Thoughts?

We are hopeful to help our daughter acquire a home eventually.  Much as you describe above Laurine. Do  you know if Movin Out could help in Kenosha?   (As an aside, we have started an ABLE acct for house, dental and/or car. Not sure how it will actually help.)

February 2018 Featured Discussion: What are some promising ways to obtain affordable, accessible transportation using self-direction strategies?

Questions about Self-Directed Supports or Self-Determination

Greetings from Kenosha!  I really like the idea of these targeted discussions focussed on issues.  And transportation is real BEAR that influences most aspects of everyone's life.  I'd like to share three observations.

Google cars.  We want a self driving car for our daughter who may never drive.  We haven't tried to open that door yet. We are beginning to work on getting her a permit (she is 25).  We wish we could connect with the Google Car people in WI so she can be among the first.    As I continue to age, I would also like to have access to that self-driving car.  (I just had knee replacement surgery and cannot drive, so I"m getting a personal taste of "no car".)  (Yuck.)

Service Areas.  Representative Barca is working on legislation to allow Regional commissions.  http://www.kenoshanews.com/news/local/representatives-introduce-bill-to-create-regional-transit-authority/article_810c1940-c485-5cbe-a5d9-b17f879fbb17.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=user-share
This is the right direction IMO.   There is currently no way to get to Racine from Kenosha besides a car.  We would like to go shopping (Barnes & Noble, Boston Store, etc.)  We wouldn't go there every day but would like to go there and it would open up job opportunities. We would also like to be able to go to to the Amtrak station in Racine for things like summer fest, shopping, Amtrak to see  cousins in MN, etc.  Hopefully a regional agency could help us weave the transportation solution.

Training.  We will need training on some level to use the integrated system.

Finally, we want an electric/hybrid google car!
