This presentation will offer insight into how to identify and incorporate adaptive and customized cooking tools and strategies with the goal of increasing access to daily meal preparation in the home. Cross disability assessment of kitchen environments will be discussed with case examples given throughout. Examples of commercially available adaptive tools will be discussed along with modifications of standard tools, individualized tool fabrication, and incorporation of technologies such as voice control and AI features into meal planning. Adaptation of standard cooking techniques and strategies for safety will also be touched on with an emphasis on individualized adaptations for sustainable implementation.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define four common barriers to daily meal preparation and potential limitations of commercially available tools: Physical Access, Environmental Limitations, Safety, and Confidence.
2. Identify at least eight different kitchen tools or tool adaptations that may increase access to safe meal preparation.
3. Identify at least three different safety strategies to increase confidence and independence in the kitchen.
