2021 Self-Determination Conference

Open Discussion

The conference was awesome this year ! Kudos to all the BPDD , In control, Tmg , and all the people setting it up. I love the fact that so many were able to access it through different languages-be it signing or be it Spanish. I also thought that sessions on and by people of many different abilities made it so much more interesting. Everyone was positive, solutions based. Just nothing short of awesome !! We all look forward to being in person but the sectionals and the keynotes were amazing!

2019 Self-Determination Conference

Open Discussion

The 2019 Self Determination Conference was awesome once again. I loved all the technological ideas from members on how to make it easier to live independently. Low tech and high tech ideas and strategies were offered, with many more to come hopefully on the new YouTube Channel. A couple of my favorites were The Hot Topics Session on Self Determination, which was highly interactive. One new attendee said he it built his confidence in being able to do things on his own. The movie that they showed was awesome also: Intelligent Thinking showed how IQ tests came about and influenced lives of so many with disabilities. Finally, I think that seeing how successful so many with disabilities have become as active working citizens and the networking that happens were all my favorite parts. Thanks to In Control and BPDD for hosting and supporting this conference.

What Are Your Hot Topics or Challenges?

Hot Topics and Challenges for Self-Determination

Hot Topics and Challenges: Our most challenging issue is finding and maintaining good caregivers over time due to the national shortage. This conference gave us some new ideas and resources to look into and we hope that some of the task forces will take up the issue of the shortage, pay for caregivers as well as benefits.

It would be a great idea to actually have some elected officials at the conference to address what they are doing to help with this issue. With an audience the size of this conference, it would be well attended and people are very interested in this topic!
